Academic career:

• Study of Art History, Archaeology and Romance Philology in Münster, Pavia and Rome, Dr. of Philosophy
• Employee at the museums of city of Cologne, then head of the Grafische Sammlung of the Museum Ludwig, Cologne, from 1971
• Director of the museum of Modern Art, Vienna, from 1979
• Director of the Sprengel Museum Hannover, from 1989
• Director at the Kunstmuseum Bonn, from 1993 to 2008

Courses taught

• Akademie der Bildenden Künste Wien, at the Hochschule für angewandte Kunst Vienna, since 1980
• University of Hannover, since 1990
• Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelm University of Bonn, since 1993

Numerous publications, inter alia on the art of the Nazarenes, particularly 20^th century art.
