Prof. Dr. Stefan Wild was born in Leipzig in 1937, studied Semitic languages, Islam Studies, Egyptology and philosophy in Munich, at Yale, in Erlangen and Tübingen, and obtained his doctorate degree in 1961. After working as assistant at the Oriental Institute of the Deutsche Morgenländische Gesellschaft in Beirut and the Oriental seminary of the University of Heidelberg, as well as his 1968 habilitation in Munich, he led the Oriental Institute in Beirut as its director from 1968 to 1973. From 1975 to 1977, he taught at the University of Amsterdam, from 1977 to 2002 he taught at the Oriental seminary of the University of Bonn. From 1974 to 1981, Stefan Wild was co-editor of the series Bibliotheca Islamica and until 2009, he was co-editor of the Zeitschrift der Welt des Islams. He obtained emeritus status in April of 2002, and was made fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin in 2002. He received the Helga und Edzard Reuter-Stiftung prize for his works in 2005.
