Book launch: „In the Realm of Corona Normativities. A Momentary Snapshot of a Dynamic Discourse“
The situation is a bit spooky… On October 13, we want to talk about a pandemic – a global phenomenon – under communication conditions that are justifiable. That is, we’re avoiding the danger of “contagious sociality” by using this Zoom format, a format which deprives us of the many positive aspects made possible by the Käte Hamburger Center’s approach, namely communication through co-presence as the secret to incredible cognitive opportunities.
On the other hand, without this new form of communication, we would have never been able to simultaneously bring together as many deliberative and academic culture as we now can – from Moscow to New York, from Rabat to Tokyo, from Paris to... We are in temporal, but not physical co-presence, even if we perceive ourselves as mere tiles on an oversized screen, which is not even identical for all of us, but rather seems personalized. We cannot look into each other’s eyes, but we see ourselves, as was once reported by Comte – after examining his study after his death: “Writing, Comte always saw himself”.
It is under these complex communication circumstances that we want to meet and discuss with each other on October 13, 2020. The schedule is as follows:
1. I will speak firstly about the book project’s origin, meaning, and purpose, as well as consider the following questions:
- What does “Law as Culture” even have to do with the pandemic?
- What do we mean by the concept of a “validity culture”?
- Which type of important cultural variations have emerged for this global phenomen?
2. I will then ask contributors from all around the world, including
Mariacarla Gadebusch-Bondio, Greta Olson, Alexander Filippov, Masahiro Noguchi, Diana Villegas, Pierre Brunet, Yousra Abourabi, Peter Goodrich, and Annemarie Bonnet,
to speak, before transitioning into an open discussion with the wider audience.
3. This will position us to address one final question: What demands are there for further research on the epidemic from the perspective of the cultural and social sciences?
