Between Sexuality, Gender & Reproduction: On the Pluralization of Family Forms

Invitation to the online conference: "On the Pluralization of Family Forms" (Nov 17-18, 2021)

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

Dear Friends and Supporters of the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study “Law as Culture”,

We would hereby like to cordially invite you to our upcoming online conference "Between Sexuality, Gender & Reproduction: On the Pluralization of Family Forms" on Wednesday, November 17, from 2. p.m. and Thursday, November 18, 2021, until 2 p.m. The conference, which will take place online (via Zoom), will discuss changing family forms, (legal) concepts and ideals and bring together scholars of various disciplines and backgrounds, including theology, sociology, medical humanities, history of art, communication and legal studies.

To register for the conference, please send an email to kspranz@uni-bonn.de by November 12, 2021. You will then receive the zoom link to the conference. For more information, please see the poster (PDF) and flyer (PDF) of the conference.

On the concept of the conference:

The pluralization of family forms not only calls into question quasi-biological explanations of family and naturalistic implications, but it is to be seen as an expression of a social transformation of society and its normative foundations as a whole. Particularly with regard to human rights, the interplay between normative change and developments of family concepts and practices will be examined. In that context, the conference explores (severed) links between gender, sexuality and reproduction.

The conference starts off with an analysis of different, developing, and possibly interconnected concepts of family in coexisting legal systems. The debate will then turn to conceptions, i.e. the forming of the idea of family, in the International Community of States with a focus on the function of (international) human rights and courts. Against that background, the role of genetic links for the recognition of families as such by the European Court of Human Rights, by means of medical reproductive treatments and legal access to them as well as by means of legal terminology for a plurality of families will be discussed. The final panel will be dedicated to normativity and representations of diverse families in (social) media and art.
