Tim Shaw (London, Bonn): ‘Black Smoke Rising’. How conflict has informed 10 years art practice

Abstract

Tim Shaw will give a talk about how Britain’s decision to join the US led invasion of Iraq has profoundly influenced ten year’s art practice, from projects about conflicts in the Middle East to Northern Ireland. The presentation examines how images of war, such as the Abu Ghraib hooded prisoner, possess a resonance that universally transcends time, place and religion.

Curriculum Vitae

Tim Shaw, born 1964 in Belfast, is a contemporary visual artist. He has had a number of significant solo shows throughout the UK and internationally. He was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts in 2013 and is a fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. Most recently, he was awarded the Jack Goldhill Award for Sculpture. Currently, he is Artist in Residence at the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study in the Humanities “Law as Culture” where he is receiving the Georg Simmel Artist Stipend for his work on the topic “The Birth of Breakdown Clown”.
