Greta Olson (Gießen/Bonn): The Centrality of the Constitution to US American Culture – Arguments from the Left and the Right

Abstract

The Constitution - note the capitalized spelling - plays a starring role in American cultural politics. Both the Tea Party and the Occupy Movement have recurred to the Constitution to justify their aims; and knowing one's rights - a reference to the Constitution's Bill of Rights (1791) and subsequent amendments - is a central part of American identity.
This talk traces historical reasons for the centrality of the Constitution to American life and cultural identity; it offers examples of how constitutional interpretation has been employed to pursue a variety of political and social aims. Further, it compares the visibility of the Supreme Court and the Supreme Court Justices and the publicity of Supreme Court decisions to perceptions of the Federal Constitutional Court Justice of Germany, its justices, and its rulings.

Greta Olson studierte Philosophie und Studio Art am Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY, sowie Kunstgeschichte und Philosophie am University College London. Sie erwarb einen Magisterabschluss in Philosophie und Englisch an der Universität Freiburg, wo sie anschließend in Englisch, Philosophie und vergleichender Sprachwissenschaft promoviert wurde und für ihre Habilitation "'Criminal Beasts' and the Rise of Positivist Criminology - From Shakespeare to Dickens" die venia legendi in Amerikanischer und Englischer Literatur und Kulturwissenschaften erhielt. Von 2000 bis 2002 arbeitete Greta Olson als Lehrbeauftragte an der Universität Freiburg und war Gastdozentin an den Universitäten Innsbruck (2001) und Basel (2003). Von 2002 bis 2003 war sie Gastprofessorin für American Studies an der Universität Bonn. 2004 wurde sie als Assistenzprofessorin an der Universität Freiburg durch ein Stipendium der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft gefördert, bevor sie 2009 zur Professorin für englische und amerikanische Literatur und Kulturwissenschaften an der Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen berufen wurde. Professor Olson ist Herausgeberin des European Journal of English Studies (EJES) und, gemeinsam mit Jeanne Gaakeer, Mitgründerin des European Network for Law and Literature. Zu ihren Forschungsschwerpunkten zählen die Analyse von Recht und Literatur/Kultur (Law and Literature/Culture), Punitivitäts- und Sicherheitsstudien, kritische Kulturnarratologie, Posthumanismus sowie feministische Theorie und Gender Studies. Seit April 2014 ist Greta Olson Fellow am Käte Hamburger Kolleg "Recht als Kultur".
