Program “Forum Law as Culture” from January until March 2015

Through its homonymous forum, the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study in the Humanities “Law as Culture” offers a space for interdisciplinary and intercultural exchange with international guests and fellows at the Centre. The forum events are open to the interested public. Admission is free; registration is requested: rechtalskultur@uni-bonn.de

News November 2014

Award of the Science Prize of the Aby-Warburg-Stiftung to Prof. Dr. Eva Schürmann, currently Fellow at the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study in the Humanities “Law as Culture”

On the occasion of the award ceremony, Eva Schürmann will give a lecture on the topic “Homo depictor. Vom Darstellen als Lebensform” at the Warburg-Haus in Hamburg on December 9, at 7:30 pm.

Award of an honorary doctorate in philosophy to Prof. Dr. jur. Werner Gephart by the University of Turin

Anselm Kiefer, Werner Gephart (name tags switched)On 26 November 2014, Professor Dr. jur. Werner Gephart, along with German artist Anselm Kiefer, was awarded an honorary doctorate in philosophy by the chancellor of the University of Turin, Prof. Dr. Gianmaria Ajani.

New Fellows and beginning of the new research year at the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study in the Humanities “Law as Culture”

With the beginning of the new research year, focusing on the topic “Cultural Forms of Law: Literature, film and architecture”, the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study in the Humanities “Law as Culture” welcomes eight new Fellows: legal philosopher Dr. José-Manuel Barreto (Bogotá), legal scholars Prof. Dr. Thomas Dreier (Karlsruhe/Freiburg), Prof. Dr. Inge Kroppenberg (Göttingen) and Prof. Dr. Laurent de Sutter (Brüssel/New York), political scientist Prof. Dr. Otto Kallscheuer (Sassari), art historian and legal scholar Dr. Dr. Grischka Petri (Bonn/Glasgow) as well as philosophers Prof. Dr. Eva Schürmann (Magdeburg) and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Enrico Terrone (Turin) commenced their research activities at the Center in October 2014. Previously, in September 2014, the Center’s new Artist in Residence, painter and graphic designer Stefan Stößel (Leipzig), has moved into the Georg Simmel atelier.

Award of the “Premio Laici per il Mediterraneo 2014” to Professor Gephart

The “Premio Laici per il Mediterraneo 2014” has been awarded to the Center’s Director, Prof. Dr. jur. Werner Gephart, at the “Festival Mediterraneo della Laicità” on 19 October 2014 in Pescara. The Center views this as recognition for the efforts to encourage discourse about religious and secular validity cultures in the Mediterranean region, the cradle of numerous legal cultures.

Opening speech for the establishment of the “Jacques Derrida / Law and Culture” International Chair of Philosophy at the University of Turin

On the 10th anniversary of the death of philosopher Jacques Derrida on October 9, 2014, a Chair of Philosophy “Jacques Derrida” has been created in his honor in Turin with the specification “Law and Culture”. The naming latches on to the final years of the great philosopher's life, during which he took increasing interest in questions of law and non-deconstructible justice. The chair holder for the first year is Paris sociologist Prof. Dr. Michel Wieviorka. On the occasion of the establishment of this chair at the University of Turin, Prof. Dr. Werner Gephart held the opening speech, which is available at the following link:

On the occasion of the commencing research year “Cultural Forms of Law: Literature, film and architecture”, Prof. Dr. jur. New Publications

“Global Age Essays on Social and Cultural Change” by Martin Albrow has just been released as a further volume in the publication series “Schriftenreihe Recht als Kultur”. Martin Albrow was Fellow at the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study in the Humanities “Law as Culture” from October 2012 to September 2013; since then, he has been appointed Senior Fellow at the Center.

A further new release is the volume “Recht” (“Law”) of the Max Weber-Studienausgabe (Max Weber study edition) (MWS I/22-3) edited by Werner Gephart and Siegfried Hermes and including an extensive postcript by Werner Gephart.


Professor Dr. Gephart holds the speech for the establishment of the “Chair of Philosophy Jacques Derrida ‘Law and Culture’” at the University of Turin

Picture: Family Law and Culture in EuropeIn August 2014, the conference volume "Family Law and Culture in Europe: Developments, Challenges and Opportunities" edited by Katharina Boele-Woelki, Nina Dethloff and Werner Gephart and documenting the eponymous conference held in August 2013 by the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study in the Humanities "Law as Culture" in cooperation with the "Commission on European Family Law", the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung and the University of Bonn's Insitute for German, European and International Family Law.

Film screening

On Tuesday, February 25, 2014, there will be a screening of the documentary film “Lady Judges of Pakistan” by the anthropologist of law Prof. Dr. Livia Holden (Karakoram International University; LOEWE-Schwerpunkt „Außergerichtliche und gerichtliche Konfliktlösung", Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main) as part of the “forum law as culture”.
