Curriculum Vitae

Jenny Hellman first majored in European Studies at the University of Maastricht before completing her Master’s degree in Societies, Globalization, and Development at the University of Bonn. Her Master’s thesis, entitled „Concepts of Law and Legal Practices of Muslim Migrants in Germany”, was written at the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study, where Ms. Hellman has been working since 2010, first as a student assistant and later as a research assistant beginning in 2013.

Various exchange and work projects have led her to Bolivia, Guatemala, and Argentina, where she not only addressed developmental politics issues, but also took particular interest in the confrontation with the Latin American dictatorial past. After receiving her degree, she (together with Regina Mennig) made the documentary film Algo mío – Argentina’s Stolen Children, which focuses on how the systematic kidnapping of children during the Argentinian military dictatorship is dealt with legally. The film was honored with the 2017 Camera Justitia Award at the Movies that Matter Festival in The Hague.

For her dissertation project, she is examining the emotional penetration of the law in the context of transnational justice on the basis of the recent criminal proceedings in Argentina.
