Meeting of Authors: Discussion between Hamid Sulaiman and Werner Gephart about Freedom Hospital at the Bundeskunsthalle Bonn

As part of the exhibition Comics! Mangas! Graphic Novels!, a meeting of authors is taking place:

Hamid Sulaiman, born 1986 in Damascus, studied Architecture and works as a painter and illustrator. In 2011, he fled from Syria and lives today in Paris and Berlin. He is the currently the 2017 Artist in Residence at the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study “Law as Culture” in Bonn.

Freedom Hospital is his first book. In the graphic novel, he utilizes expressive black and white images to tell of the Syrian Civil War. The pacifist, Yasmin, runs an underground hospital to care for wounded rebels. In Freedom Hospital, the most diverse ways of life cross paths: A French journalist wants to shoot a documentary about the conflict; the Alawite Dr. Fawaz helps injured insurgents; the hospital’s cook fled from her conservative Sunni family; and one of the patients turns out to be a spy for Assad. Hamid Sulaiman, with his textual and pictorial narrative, opens our eyes to the complex conflict in Syria.

Following an introduction by Werner Gephart, Founding Director of the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study “Law as Culture”, Hamid Sulaiman will read excerpts from Freedom Hospital in order to speak to the moderator and audience about his work.

In cooperation with Institut français Bonn (IF) and the University of Bonn’s Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study “Law as Culture”. Held in German and French.
