Curriculum Vitae

Prof. Dr. Mirjam Künkler studierte Politikwissenschaft, Afrikanistik, Orientalistik, und VWL an den Universitäten Leipzig, Paris (ESC), und Kapstadt. 2008 wurde sie an der Columbia University, New York, mit einer Arbeit zum Thema “Democratization, Islamic Thought, and Social Movements: Coalitional Success and Failure in Iran and Indonesia” bei Charles Tilly, Alfred Stepan und Said Arjomand promoviert (Ph.D.). Anschließend lehrte Mirjam Künkler Near Eastern Studies an der Universität Princeton. Darüber hinaus war sie Gastwissenschaftlerin an der Universität von Teheran und der Islamischen Staatlichen Universität Makassar in Indonesien.
Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte sind die iranische und indonesische Politik; sie hat publiziert zum Verhältnis von Religion und Politik, islamischen politischem Denken, politischen Parteien, sowie Rechts- und Verfassungsfragen in den beiden Ländern. Zur Zeit beschäftigt sich Mirjam Künkler insbesondere mit weiblichen geistlichen Autoritäten im Islam, und dem Stellenwert der Religion in den Rechtssystemen Irans und Indonesiens. 2013 leitete sich mit zwei Kolleginnen eine sechsmonatige Forschungsgruppe zum Thema Religion und Verfassungswesen am ZiF, Bielefeld. Zusammen mit ihrem Kollegen Mehrzad Boroujerdi gründete sie das Iran Social Science Data Portal, das heute wichtigste internationale Internetportal zu sozialwissenschaftlichen Daten des Iran. Von Juli 2017 bis Juni 2018 war Prof. Dr. Mirjam Künkler Fellow am Käte Hamburger Kolleg „Recht als Kultur“.

Forschungsprojekt

The Legal System of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Comparative Perspective

Während des Aufenthaltes am KHK Bonn beendet Mirjam Künkler die Arbeit an einem Buch zur Islamisierung des Rechtssystems des Iran nach der Revolution von 1979 und einem Sammelband (mit Devin Stewart) zu weiblichen religiösen Gelehrten in der Geschichte des schiitischen Islam.

The portal’s aim is to contribute to a more empirically-driven engagement with Iran on part of scholars, journalists and policy makers.
