Curriculum Vitae

Elizabeth Suzanne Kassab studierte Philosophie an der American University of Beirut und an der Universität Fribourg/Freiburg (Schweiz), wo sie mit der Dissertation „The Theory of Social Action in the Schutz-Parsons Debate“ promovierte. Anschließend war sie Postdoctoral Fellow an der Universität Bielefeld, bevor sie zunächst an der American University of Beirut und später an der Universität Balamand lehrte. 1999 erhielt Dr. Kassab ein Fulbright Stipendium an der New School University in New York. Im Anschluss daran war sie Visiting Scholar an der Columbia University, bevor sie von 2006 bis 2007 als Visiting Associate Professor am Yale Center for International and Area Studies, und 2008 als Arcapita Visiting Professor am Middle East Institute der Columbia University beschäftigt war. Von 2008 bis 2009 war Dr. Kassab zudem Research Fellow am der Max-Weber-Stiftung zugehörigen Orient Institut Beirut. Als Gastwissenschaftlerin war sie im Sommersemester 2010 am Lehrstuhl für Geschichte Westasiens am Historischen Seminar der Universität Erfurt und 2011 an der Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies der Freien Universität Berlin tätig. Im Frühjahrssemester 2012 war Elizabeth Suzanne Kassab Visiting Professor am Cogut Center for the Humanities der Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Von Oktober 2013 bis September 2014 war sie Fellow am Käte Hamburger Kolleg „Recht als Kultur“.

Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen in der sowohl westlichen als auch postkolonialen  Kulturphilosophie, mit besonderem Fokus auf zeitgenössisch-arabischem Denken sowie Untersuchungen zu kultureller Krisis, Authentizität und Kritik. Für die arabische Version ihres letzten Buchs „Contemporary Arab Thought: Cultural Critique in Comparative Perspective” (2010) wurde Dr. Kassab 2013 mit dem Sheikh Zayed Book Award in der Kategorie „Contribution to the Development of Nations“ ausgezeichnet.

Forschungsprojekt

Arab thought and Arab revolts: Intellectual critique and political protestation. Arab intellectuals as legislators

Dr Kassab pursues her work on contemporary Arab thought by examining the interface of intellectual critique and political protestation in the Arab world, before and after the recent Arab revolutions. In her current project she studies a number of debates on enlightenment and empowerment that took place in Syria, Egypt and the Maghreb during the last 3 decades. She looks at the self-reflection of critical Arab thinkers in this interface between critique and politics, especially since the eruption of the popular uprisings. During her year at the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study in the Humanities “Law as Culture”, she will focus on the commitment of a number of Arab intellectuals to various efforts of legal reform since 2011.
