Bevor die Soziologin Marta Bucholc 2006 in Warschau promovierte, schloss sie neben dem Master in Soziologie (2000, Warschau) bereits einen Master in Philosophie (2003, Warschau), einen Master in Rechtswissenschaften (2004, Warschau) sowie das D.E.S.S. au Droit de Societés (2004, Poitiers) ab. Seit 2006 ist sie Assistant Professor für Soziologie an der Universität Warschau. Dr. Bucholc´ Forschung wurde mit zahlreichen Preisen und Stipendien ausgezeichnet. So erhielt sie den Florian Znaniecki Award der Polish Sociological Association, das START Fellowship der Foundation for Polish Science sowie das Bronisław Geremek Fellowship des Instituts für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen in Wien, wo sie von 2010 bis 2011 Junior Visiting Fellow war.
Das Forschungsprojekt „Involvement and Detachment in Legal Concepts and Practices ─ On the potential of Norbert Elias's approach in the global comparative research of legal cultures", mit dem sich Marta Bucholc am Käte Hamburger Kolleg „Recht als Kultur" befasst, fügt sich thematisch in ein größeres Forschungsvorhaben zur Wissenssoziologie Elias´ ein. Zudem arbeitet sie im Rahmen des Bronisław Geremek Fellowships an dem Projekt „Wyjść poza język. Weber i Wittgenstein o polityce i nauce" (Beyond the language. Weber and Wittgenstein on politics and science).
Darüber hinaus ist Marta Bucholc als Übersetzerin soziologischer Schriften tätig. So übersetzte sie unter anderem 2008 Michel Maffesolis Werk „Le temps des tribus. Le déclin de l'individualisme dans les sociétés postmodernes" (1988) in die polnische Sprache und arbeitet zurzeit einer Übersetzung von Nobert Elias´ „Die höfische Gesellschaft". Von Oktober 2012 bis September 2013 war Marta Bucholc Fellow am Käte Hamburger Kolleg „Recht als Kultur".

Forschungsprojekt

Involvement and Detachment in Legal Concepts and Practices.
On the potential of Norbert Elias's approach in the global comparative research of legal cultures

The aim of my research proposal for the academic year 2012/13 at the Käte Hamburger Kolleg "Recht als Kultur" is remedying the drawbacks of conducting comparative research of legal cultures in the globalized world. I argue that the principal source of difficulty in this field is the limited applicability of theories of culture based on an assumed existence of a clearly delimited society. I name a score of phenomena demonstrating that globalization leads to an emergence of new actors, new areas and new processes of creating and transforming legal cultures. All of these exceed the boundaries of any single society, thus calling for a new heuristic, which I propose to construe based on Norbert Elias's categories of involvement and detachment. I claim that a model based on these two notions may be successfully used in comparative analysis of legal cultures by way of avoiding both the plight of ethnocentrism and the blind alley of radical culturalism.
