Rudolf Stichweh - Normativity and Solidarity in the World Society

Abstract

Since their rise after World War II theories of World Society have often been characterized by an intellectual bifurcation. They either had a rationalistic bent and described world society as only being based on network structures of interrelation and on the institutionalization of cognitive expectations (in science, knowledge systems, civil and military technologies). Or they looked at World Society as a kind of Utopia which presupposed the cessation of serious macroconflicts and the realization of humanistic ideals.

The talk will try to demonstrate that both theories are insufficient, even wrong. It will instead argue for the symmetry of cognitive and normative expectations and structures in the rise of world society as a historical process since the fourteenth century. The argument will consist from four steps: 1. A technical remark on the status of the concept of solidarity in social theory. 2. A brief look at the historical semantics of world society and the strong normative and solidaristic traditions in this semantics. 3. An argument for the universality of normative expectations in all the function systems of world society. 4. An overview of societal forms of the institutionalization of solidarity.

Curriculum Vitae

Rudolf Stichweh studierte Soziologie und Philosophie an der FU Berlin und an der Universität Bielefeld, wo er anschließend zum Dr. rer. soc. promovierte. Seine Habilitation an der Fakultät für Soziologie der Universität Bielefeld erlangte er 1990 mit Forschungsarbeiten zum Zusammenhang von Staatsbildung und Universitätsentwicklung im frühneuzeitlichen Europa. Zuvor war Rudolf Stichweh Forschungsstipendiat unter anderem des Max-Planck-Instituts für Gesellschaftsforschung in Köln sowie des Maison des Sciences de l’Homme in Paris. Anschließend war er am Max-Planck-Institut für europäische Rechtsgeschichte in Frankfurt/M. tätig. Von 1994 bis 2003 war er Professor für Soziologische Theorie und Allgemeine Soziologie an der Fakultät für Soziologie der Universität Bielefeld und von 1999-2001 Dekan dieser Fakultät. Von 2003 bis 2012 war er Professor für Soziologische Theorie und Allgemeine Soziologie an der Universität Luzern, wo er von 2006 bis 2010 auch das Amt des Rektors innehatte. Außerdem war Professor Stichweh unter anderem Fellow am Wissenschaftskolleg Berlin und Visiting Professor an der Princeton University. Seit August 2012 hat Rudolf Stichweh die Dahrendorf-Professur für „Theorie der modernen Gesellschaft“ an der Universität Bonn inne und ist Direktor des „Forum Internationale Wissenschaft Bonn“.

Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen in den Bereichen der Theorie der Weltgesellschaft, der Soziologie des Fremden, der Soziologie der Wissenschaft und der Universitäten, den Theorien soziokultureller Evolution, der Systemtheorie und der historisch orientierten Makrosoziologie.
